A 5-minute cleaning routine for one room
Pick one room, set a timer for five minutes and do four small things in order: grab one cloth and a bag, clear loose items from the main surface, wipe that surface, then deal with the most visible spot on the floor. When the timer ends, stop. Five minutes will not clean a whole home, but it can make one room feel noticeably calmer.
The 5-minute checklist
- ½ minGrab your tools and pick the room
One cloth or wipe, one bag for rubbish. Choose the room you see most.
- 1½ minClear loose items
Bin obvious rubbish and put stray things in one pile to deal with later.
- 1½ minWipe the main surface
The counter, sink or table people notice first. Top to bottom, one pass.
- 1 minFix the most visible floor spot
Pick up what is on the floor, or sweep one small patch.
- ½ minTake the bag out and stop
Tie the bag, put the cloth away, and finish.
Total: 5 minutes
Before you start
- One damp cloth or a surface wipe
- One small bag for rubbish
- A timer — your phone is fine
- No sprays you need to wait on, and no stepping ladder
Choose one room
The same five minutes looks different depending on where you are. Use one of these versions instead of the general list if it fits better.
- Kitchen: clear the counter by the sink, wipe it, rinse or stack dishes, and sweep crumbs from the floor in front of it.
- Bathroom: put toiletries back, wipe the sink and tap, hang the towel straight, and empty the small bin.
- Living room: collect cups and wrappers, fold the throw, straighten cushions and clear the coffee table.
What to skip
- Cupboards, drawers and the fridge — they turn five minutes into an hour.
- Anything that needs soaking or drying time.
- Sorting the pile of stray items. Put it in one place; sorting is another session.
A clear stop
When the timer ends, finish the stroke you are on and stop. Not adding “just one more thing” is what keeps the routine small enough to repeat tomorrow.
